Mashhad is Iran’s holiest and second-largest city. Its raison d’être and main sight is the beautiful, massive and ever-growing Haram (shrine complex) commemorating the AD 818 martyrdom of Shiite Islam’s eighth Imam, Imam Reza.

History of Mashhad In earlier times Mashhad had been a village called Sanābād (also called Nūqān). It was long overshadowed by the pre-Islamic city of Ṭūs. Both the ʿAbbāsid caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd (ruled 786–809) and the eighth imam of Shiʿi Islam, ʿAlī al-Riḍā (died 818) were buried in Sanābād.

Mashhad (Hebrew: מַשְׁהַד ‎, Arabic: مشهد ‎, Mash-hed transliteration, martyrium) is an Arab town located 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) northeast of Nazareth in Israel's Northern District. In 2019 it had a population of 8,373, most of whom were Muslims.
