About Cedar City Just a couple of hours north of Las Vegas lies an oasis called Cedar City. Home to Southern Utah University, and close to a number of scenic national parks, this charming and compact city offers visitors a great home base for exploring the area. Cedar City sits one mile + 500 ft. above sea (take that, Denver!), where the Markagunt Plateau smashed into the Great Basin. Lifting a desert so far off the ground makes for great outdoorism all year round: every winter sport from December to April and hiking, biking, camping, glamping, climbing, (rhyming?) etc. from April to... well...

Cedar City has long billed itself as "gateway to Utah's National Parks." One excellent travel itinerary is to follow the loop from Cedar City, southeast to Zion National Park, then north to Bryce Canyon National Park and then back through Cedar Breaks National Monument to Cedar City.
