Durkan knew she wanted to be a lawyer when she was just five years old. She was already out to get the bad guys when she was growing up in what was then rural Issaquah. Her older sister, Ryan Durkan, ’81, now a land-use lawyer in Seattle, remembers Jenny coming up with a plan to deter burglars who had been plaguing the neighborhood.

Durkan, 62, a Seattle native, longtime lawyer and former U.S. attorney, is Seattle's first female mayor in 89 years. She was elected in 2017, after Mayor Ed Murray resigned amid allegations of child sex abuse. Her decision leaves an open field for next year's mayoral election.
