The local newspaper is hosting a Father of the Year contest. Betty, Bud, and Kathy want to nominate Jim. Jim finds out and is overjoyed that his children want to submit an entry. But the kids cannot think of anything to actually write.

Family man Jim Anderson copes with the everyday problems among his wife Margaret and their three children as they experience day-to-day changes. Bud's first dance is threatened when he learns that his parents are going to be there. Jim's definition of citizenship gets the Andersons into trouble.

Jim sets out to teach his layabout kids a proper life ethic. Jim and Margaret disagree on whether Jim should buy Bud a motor. Jim and Margaret go to the big football game every year. This year, Margaret finds she cannot go and Betty is promised the ticket - Until Jim offers it to someone else.
