History of Spirit Airlines The airline was founded in 1980, in Macomb County, Michigan, as Charter One, providing travel packages to various destinations, such as Atlantic City, Las Vegas and the Bahamas. Ten years later, Charter One introduced scheduled flights from Boston and Providence, R.I., to Atlantic City.

Spirit's Annus Terribilis: 1996. In the spring of 1996, Comair Holdings Inc. announced plans to buy Spirit Airlines for $20 million. It had considered investing in Spirit since 1994. The deal, however, never materialized. By this time, Spirit was flying ten DC-9s, five of which it owned. It had 500 employees, a fifth of them seasonal.

On April 2, 1993, Spirit Airlines began scheduled service to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and St. Petersburg, Florida. Flights between Atlantic City and Fort Myers, Florida, began on September 25, 1993. Service at Philadelphia began in 1994.
