From its Native American roots and Spanish Missionary heritage, to cultural milestones and military influence, San Diego's role and contribution in shaping the region, the country and the world can be found when exploring its complex and fascinating history.

San Diego history comes alive at Old Town State Historic Park, the "birthplace of California," Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside and other historic landmarks in San Diego County. Going Back in Time As the first city recognized in California, San Diego is rich with history.

Sighted in 1542 and named San Miguel by Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the area was renamed for the Spanish monk San Diego de Alcalá de Henares in 1602 by Sebastián Vizcaíno. Gaspar de Portolá founded a presidio (military post) there on July 16, 1769, and, on the same day, Father Junípero Serra dedicated the first of the California missions (restored 1931).

San Diego: History Spanish, Mexicans, Americans Lay Claim to San Diego Region Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the discoverer of California, sailed into what is now San Diego Bay and claimed the surrounding region for the King of Spain in 1542. The bay was named in 1602 by another Spanish explorer, Don Sebastian Viscaino.

These subjects and collections include compilations of images from various decades, preserved and maintained in the City Clerk Archives.

The quality of the photographs was exceptional, even enlarged to 30”x40”. The History Center had an expansive collection of images and a staff that was helpful through the process.
