Kyōto, city, seat of Kyōto fu(urban prefecture), west-central Honshuisland, Japan. It is located some 30 miles (50 km) northeast of the industrial city of Ōsakaand about the same distance from Nara, another ancient centre of Japanese culture. Gently sloping downward from north to south, the city averages 180 feet (55 metres) above sea level.

Although Kyoto is the centre of traditional Japan, it’s also a modern city with concrete high-rises, numerous vending machines, and a vibrant food scene. But it’s on a smaller, more manageable scale than Tokyo or Osaka with plenty of green spaces, views of the surrounding hills, and neighbourhoods that feel like villages.
